Tips to Newcomers

  • When you buy your first yoga mat, you may discover that your so-called sticky mat has no traction at all. Aside from being annoying, if you are really slipping on your mat, you could hurt yourself. You can “break in” your mat by washing it in the tub with “a drop” of mild detergent, rinse well, squeeze out the excess water and roll up with a beach towel then hang to dry or let it bake in the sun for an hour on each side. Keep using your mat and it will soon acquire a slip-free surface. If sweaty palms are causing you to slip, try placing a hand towel across the front of your mat. Just make sure the towel is on the mat so it doesn’t slide. I personally prefer a 1/4″ mat (or 6-8 mm) opposed to an 1/8″ which I feel is too thin for knees and wrists.
  • Eating before class; In yoga practice we twist from side to side, turn upside down, and bend forward and backward. If you have not fully digested your last meal, it will make itself known to you in ways that may be embarrassing. If you are a person with a fast-acting digestive system and are afraid you might get hungry or feel weak during yoga class, experiment with a light snack such as yogurt, a few nuts, or juice about 30 minutes to an hour before class.
  • Traditionally yoga is done with bare feet; please respect this timeless practice by removing your shoes immediately and store them in the back. Socks can cause you to slip. Please do not walk around the studio floor in your shoes where your face will be. Likewise if the floor is dirty, you will be rolling it back into your mat from the surface area.
  • Keep your phones Smart; Please turn them off or silence before the practice starts.
  • Wear comfortable, breathable, clothing that allows for easy movement but doesn’t expose yourself when your upside down.
  • Please refrain from wearing perfumes or cologne due to the sensitivity some students may have to fragrances.
  • Notify me before registration if you are pregnant, have any medical condition, or an injury that may affect your practice.
  • Please arrive on time as each class has its own rhythm, The beginning is important.  If you arrive late to class because of unpreventable circumstances, please be respectful of the class by Quietly entering the yoga room and gently unrolling your mat. Find a place to put your mat without interrupting the other students.
  • If you need to leave early, please let me know and do so quietly before Savasana, not during.
  • Please do not attend classes under the influence of any altering drug, illegal, legal or alcohol. Your attention, balance and full facilities are required for your safety.
